As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we want to again highlight the correlation between employee engagement and workplace safety, as well as the role that mental health plays in one’s ability to engage with their work. While the workplace safety industry has traditionally focused on physical safety, mental health is increasingly understood to be just as vital in keeping your people happy, healthy and engaged in their work. #safex #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #staysafest https://lnkd.in/gGiUPPMB

Staying engaged is great for mental well-being, especially when we are older. Nurturing your connections with loved ones, joining a social group, or volunteering for something you care about is helpful to feel active and connected. Embracing movement through walks, yoga, or dancing also benefits both body and mind. Challenging yourself with brain teasers, exploring a new hobby, or learning something new helps to keep the mind sharp. Remember, if you need mental health support, a doctor or therapist is also an option. https://lnkd.in/gA6N7E_a. #MHAM2024 #MentalHealthMatters

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and as we round out our month-long look into America’s low employee engagement scores (according to Gallup), it is worth looking into the roll that mental health has in someone’s ability to engage with their work, surroundings and safety. According to the National Safety Council, “Employees experiencing mental distress use, on average, nearly $3,000 more in health care services per year than their peers. The cost of days lost averages $4,783 per year per employee, and the costs of turnover averages $5,733 per year per employee.” The business case for caring for your employees’ mental health could not be more clear. https://lnkd.in/gCV4SxJd.

In striving to increase employee engagement by lowering workplace drug and alcohol use, one vital concept is the idea of “reasonable suspicion.” The threshold for reasonable suspicion can seem subjective, which can make leaders nervous. Safex has created a FREE resource for supervisors to help assess understanding and implementation of your company’s reasonable suspicion policies. #safex #reasonablesuspicion #staysafest https://lnkd.in/g8Xi_EpJ

In looking at the statistics that point to lower employee engagement, one contributing factor in a lack of engagement is substance abuse. As the feds move to reschedule marijuana from a Class 1 to a Class 3 drug, many HR and safety workers are wondering how this will affect Drug Free Workplace (DFWP) efforts. Safex has a wealth of resources to help, from in person/virtual instructor-led training to online, on-demand courses to a complete DFWP implementation. If you have questions about your DFWP program, we’re here to help. #safex #dfwp #statysafest https://lnkd.in/gadJADAe

Studies consistently show that higher employee engagement translates to a safer work environment. While there are libraries full of books on the subject of increasing engagement, one strategy you can employ as a leader is the concept of Management By Walking Around (MBWA). It’s pretty much just what it sounds like: “MBWA is a strategy where supervisors leave their designated stations and walk around the workplace to observe ongoing activities and employees. This management system requires an unstructured and random schedule to ensure that team members aren't expecting a visit or check-in at a particular time. The random schedule also helps managers get a clearer picture of activities in the workplace. It allows office leaders get new information and spontaneously engage with other employees.” https://lnkd.in/g6uzv7Px
